Well , isn’t this a beautiful morning!
As I sit here on this snowing Valentine’s Day morning, I got to thinking about how the holiday has changed over the years. Valentine’s Day originated as a Christian feast, honoring one or two early Christian martyrs named Saint Valentine.
As a child I remember my mom buying the box of cards for my classmates. I would sit and carefully fill them out, choosing that special one for the boy that I liked the most that year. It was always fun to see who wanted me as their Valentine! As the years passed by the holiday became a bigger deal. Especially during the dating years. Those were the special nights of fancy dinners, new outfits, and a night of dancing. As I got older, the holiday became less important. Preparing a special meal, maybe getting some chocolates and flowers.
I am amazed at how commercial the holiday has become. Stores are busting with decorations as soon as the New Year’s celebrations are over. I admit, I do decorate my house. It helps me get through the winter blues. My newest joy is celebrating the holiday with my granddaughters. We have a special love celebration. It includes dinner and exchanging cards. They make cute little gifts for us. We talk about what we love about our family. It has changed from not just romantic love, but more about family and being grateful. I kind of love it!
