The Cranston-East Greenwich-Scituate girls hockey co-op is rebuilding this season and dropped its first two games of the winter. The Thunderbirds fell to Warwick 5-2 in the opener then fell to South County the following day.
Cranston-EG-Scituate will feature a roster this winter that includes nine freshmen. The Thunderbirds return a handful of starters from last year’s team but are still looking for answers in several key positions, including in net.
“We have a young team. We have nine freshmen including two goalies. I give them credit, it takes a lot of guts to do what they’re doing. We’ve got good lines, a good defense, but experience is our weakness,” said coach Matt Davis.
Lindsey Rowe, Amy Glass and Maddie Gallo all scored goals for the co-op in the opening games and all three are team captains, along with Sarah Walsh and Kaitlyn Toce. Davis has been encouraged by their leadership in the early going and is hoping to see them continue to take control as the team develops as a unit.
“Lindsey Rowe is unbelievable. If I had 24 of her, we’d be unstoppable, she’s a coach’s dream. Amy Glass is one of our best skaters, Elsa Ilteris is a strong defensive player,” said Davis, who has stressed the importance of steady development over wins and losses. “We want to make sure that every time they play that they get better. Every game you want to get better. As coaches, we do see the progress,” Davis said.
The easiest way to improve, according to Davis, is simple … experience on the ice.
“There should be improvement across the board. The biggest way to improve is by getting on the ice. The more time, the more experience you have skating, the better you’ll be,” said Davis.
