Titans come back to beat Broncos in quarters

The Toll Gate boys lacrosse team continued its impressive run this season and beat Burrillville 7-4 in the Division III Quarterfinals to clinch a spot in the semis against Smithfield.

The Broncos would take control early and grab a 4-3 lead at halftime. The Broncos maintained the 4-3 advantage heading into the fourth quarter, but the Titans would explode for four goals in the final period to complete the comeback win.

“We knew that Burrillville was a good team going in, we knew that they wouldn’t go down without a fight. We were behind at halftime and just weren’t playing our game. We made a game plan at halftime and were able to shut them down in the second half,” said Toll Gate coach Ezra Cox.

Senior defensive midfielder Jack DeGaetano sparked the comeback when the Titans won a draw early in the fourth and he took the ball the distance to score, knotting things at 4-4. Captain Sean Mullaney would score moments later after the Titans won the ensuing draw to give the Titans the lead.

Offensive improvements at halftime allowed the Titans to find their rhythm in the fourth quarter.

“We were taking some really bad penalties and were out of our element, not playing our type of lacrosse. We made a lot of offensive adjustments. The defense was playing very well but we were having a tough time getting the ball rolling on offense,” said Cox.

Captain Jacob Pickering led the way with three goals while Mullaney finished with two. Cooper Grossguth also added a goal to go along with DeGaetano’s goal, which was the first of his career.

The Titans squared off against Smithfield on the road on Wednesday, with the winner heading to this weekend’s state championship. The two teams split their regular season meetings, with each game being decided by one point.

Cox and company were excited to get the win and looked forward to getting the chance to get the better of the Sentinels.

“The kids were pumped to get the win which hopefully gives us some momentum. (Smithfield is) a very talented team and are coached very well. I think the matchup with us will be good no matter where it is at. Both games were one-goal games, this is going to be the rubber match,” said Cox.
