Locals compete at state meet

By ALEX SPONSELLER The Rhode Island high school indoor track and field state championships were held last weekend at the Providence Career and Technical Institute, and many locals made noise on the state’s biggest stage.

The Bishop Hendricken boys won the team title with a score of 76, topping La Salle who finished in second with 70. La Salle won the girls competition with 107 points while Cranston West took seventh overall with 22 points.

Here is a look at some of the local results: GIRLS

Lindsey Hobin finished second in the 55 hurdles for Cranston West, while the West relay team of Maddie Alves, Hobin, Ailani Sutherland and Quiana Pezza took second in the 800.

Sutherland finished third in the 55 meter dash for West, followed by Alves in fifth.

Alves later finished seventh in the long jump and later took 10th in the 300 dash, while Zoe Catrambone finished 10th in the 600 for Cranston East.

Dasani Stewart finished second in the long jump for Pilgrim. Alyssa Twomey finished eighth in the 55 hurdles for Pilgrim, while Toll Gate’s relay team of Mollie Cunningham, Callie Fagundes, Alison Pankowicz and Camille Remillard took eighth in the 3,200.

Johnston’s Lala Olagundoye took first place in the high jump as well as the long jump. Teammate Milana Melvin placed 10th in the shot put. BOYS

West’s Michael Conti finished fifth in the long jump while teammate Kris Degaitas took sixth place in the 55 hurdles. West’s relay team of Shawn Robbins, Nathan Quero, Peter Morales and Matt Baccari finished sixth in the 3,200.

West’s team of Conti, Alex DelNigro, Degaitas and Luke Schmidt finished seventh in the 800, while DelNigro also took seventh in the long jump. West’s Steve Faccenda later finished eighth in the shot put.

Evan Reynolds took first place in the 3,000 run for Hendricken, while Hendricken’s relay team of Brandyn Durand, Jake Kopech, Kamalie Pemberton and Tommy Francese won the 800. John Santos won the high jump for the Hawks, while teammate John Fay took first in the weight throw.

Durand placed second in the 300 dash, while Amuchin Tmbo later took third in the long jump for the Hawks. Hendricken’s Cam Hughes finished third in the shot put.

Hendricken’s Pemberton finished fourth in the 55 dash, while Hendricken’s team of Andrew Frezza, Evan McGregor, Wilson Jablonski and Josh Breard finished fourth in the 3,200.

Durand took fifth in the 55 dash while teammate Ryan Dyer took fifth in the 1,500 run. Luke Mead finished sixth for the Hawks in the 55 hurdles. Hendricken’s McGregor finished sixth in the 1,000 meter run. Hendricken’s Troy Silvestri finished sixth in the 3,000. Jude Ibarra placed seventh in the shot put for the Hawks.

Toll Gate’s relay team of Josh Paiva, Domenic Calise, Dylan Aunchman and Jamie Luna finished eighth in the 800. Santos would go on to finish eighth in the long jump for the Hawks.

Hendricken’s team of Kopech, Jacob Naiefeh, Hayden Clare and AJ Monteiro took ninth in the 1,600 while Alex Morin finished ninth in the shot put. Keegan Tierney finished ninth in the 3,000 for the Hawks, followed by teammate Andrew Frezza in 10th. Dante Salvaggio took 10th in the shot put for Hendricken.

Johnston’s Jose Echeverria finished eighth in the high jump for the Panthers.
