Falcons beat Middletown 13-7 in quarterfinals

The No. 4 Cranston West girls lacrosse team beat visiting No. 5 Middletown 13-7 last week to advance to the Division II Semifinals against Burrillville.

The West offense was clicking throughout the playoff showdown and was led by Braelyn King with five goals. Emily Abendroth added four goals and an assist while senior captain Aria Lee recorded three goals and an assist for the Falcons.

“We just played our game. Our defense stepped up where it needed to step up, our offense was able to take care of the ball. They were able to settle in and play the game we knew we could play,” said West coach Bianca Madonna.

The Falcons finished the season with a 6-4 league record and have championship aspirations with a roster that features nine seniors, most of which have playoff experience prior to this spring.

The Falcons and Broncos split their regular season matchups 1-1, with each game being decided by one goal. Although the top-seeded Broncos are the favorites on paper, Madonna feels that her team will have a shot to pull off the upset if it stays the course and plays to its strengths.

“We’re a completely different team than when we played them early in the season. The goal is to play our game, set our pace and look to capitalize when we have turnover. Stepping up on defense and taking care of the ball,” said Madonna.

In terms of the X’s and O’s, Madonna will be looking to her team to win on the draw to establish a rhythm, especially on the offensive end of the field.

“We do an excellent job when we win the draw. We are a fast paced team so if we can win the draw and get down field, that will set the tone right there,” said Madonna. “They have confidence within themselves and in the team in general. They do a good job on motivating each other and working as a team. That will be key.”

The two teams faced off on Wednesday night in Burrillville, the results were not available at press time. The winner will go on to play in the Division II title game on Sunday afternoon at Brown University.
