West boys fall in DII prelims

The Cranston West boys basketball team was upset 50-19 by East Greenwich last week in the Division II preliminary round of the playoffs.

The No. 10 Avengers won six of their previous seven games, emerging as one of the division’s hottest teams and rolling past host seventh-seed West.

The Avenger defense was sharp throughout, holding the Falcons to just seven points in the first half and shutting out West altogether in the second quarter.

Freshman guard Nate Conca wrapped up his rookie year strong, leading the Falcons with eight points including a pair of 3’s.

The Falcons, like the Avengers, did some of their best work of the winter late in the regular season as they won their final six games leading up to the playoffs. West finished with a 12-10 league record to clinch the seventh seed after spending much of the year on the playoff bubble.

The Falcons will now flip the page to next season and are slated to return much of the same core, including pieces such as Conca and Noah Germain. Captains Ethan Madden and Josh Silva are set to graduate in the spring.
