EG sweeps Falcons in semis

The Cranston West boys hockey team was ready to continue a strong playoff run Saturday night. Although a tough opponent in East Greenwich would prove to be a hard task, wrapping up the 2-0 series sweep with a 5-3 victory.

The Avengers’ Jake Barron and Cam Gaffney were able to give them an early 2-0 lead. Cranston West was able to answer the call when senior Dylan Demers found the net with six minutes to go in the first period.

After a failed power play opportunity in the last two minutes of the 1st by East Greenwich, Cranston West gained some momentum, the Falcons were no strangers to playing from behind. West’s Cameron Koretsky tied it up with a goal of his own early in the second for the falcons.

Coach Matthew Barron knew his team was ready for the challenge

“These kids have always played for each other, they have an us-against-the-world mentality, they are a very determined group.” said Barron.

Going into the final period the score was all tied at 3-all. East Greenwich was able to muscle out a 4-3 lead late in the game after a very physical third period by both teams, eventually prevailing 5-3 with an empty net goal to seal the victory.

West goalie Matthew Corrente recorded 14 saves between the pipes in the loss.

“These kids were a big part of the first team I took over as coach, they were special to me … they faced a lot of adversity this year, and we made it this far after needing to win three out of our last four just to make the playoffs. The younger guys had a chance to learn from the older guys, they know if we want to continue to be a strong team in this division, next season starts tomorrow,” said Brannon.

Coach Barron had a very competitive team this year in a tough division, which had three of the top four scorers in Rhode Island.

Senior Dylan Demers was the recipient of the Thayer award this season, which is awarded to the athlete with the most assists in the state each year. Senior Josh Zambrano received First Team All-Division honors for his contributions on defense.

Ben Jacovony and Cameron Koretsky also received awards for their play this season. The Cranston West hockey team will look to build on this season next year, with a younger group of players ready to follow the example set by this years team.

The Avengers would take Game 1 of the series with a 4-2 home win over the Falcons.

Koretsky and Thomas Harper would score West’s two goals, while Corrente finished with 28 saves in net. Conrad Swanson led EG with a hat trick in the win.
