Girls Team of the Year: West softball

The Cranston community saw plenty of top-notch action in the year 2021, especially on the girls side of things, as many locals made deep postseason runs and shined on the biggest stage.

Perhaps no team enjoyed more overall success than the Cranston West softball team, which made a return to the playoffs and sent off one of the best senior cores the program has ever seen … which is why it has been named the Cranston Herald’s girls team of the year.

The Lady Falcons enjoyed a strong regular season in the state’s tough Division I group, finishing 9-4 and wrapping up the fourth seed in the playoffs, getting some key wins against powers like eventual champion Coventry and La Salle Academy.

Although the Falcons’ run was cut short by the aforementioned Oakers in the quarterfinals, West remained one of the toughest teams in the state’s best division but also saw a tremendous amount of success within its individual players.

Between preseason, midseason and post season college commits, West will see nearly half of its starting lineup playing at the college level in the spring. “I would say that this is one of the best teams that West has ever put out,” said coach Jeff Smith of the club last year.

Mackenzie Bessette and Sophia DiPippo were named First Team All-State while Emily Durigan made the second team and Emily Bessette the third team.

West will have a big hill to climb as it gets back into the swing of things next season. Not only will West be looking to fill a large core of talent, but it will be doing so with new coach PJ Bessette, who is the girls hockey co-op coach as well.

Members of the 2021 Cranston West softball team included: Samantha Healy, Emma Petrucci, Emily Durigan, Brenna Whittaker, Gianna Paolino, Sophia Crudale, Mackenzie Bessette, Emily Eastman, Gabriella Cunha, Ava Brandow, Carissa Giarrusso, Emily Bessette, Paige Cote, Ylime Torres, Cadence Koenig, Sophia DiPippo, Sofia Marella, Mia Richardson, Talia Petit, Gianna Paolino, Alessandra Messina, Victoria DiPippo, Jenna Malloy, Hailey DeCosta, and Aliyah Conner.
