The Cranston West softball team picked up its second win of the spring on Monday when it held off visiting North Kingstown 2-1 at Brayton Park.
West pitcher Paige Cote was outstanding in the circle for the Falcons, allowing just one hit and picking up 11 strikeouts to guide the team to the victory.
“We won the game because of her, we won because she pitched as well as she did. We’ll adjust, it’s a learning experience. Yes, we have seven seniors, but we are still a young team with some freshmen and sophomores. They knew they were in a game, they didn’t give up. The girls worked hard,” said West coach PJ Bessette.
West would get each of its runs in the bottom of the first inning on fielding errors by the Skippers. Sam Healy and Mia Crudale scored West’s runs.
The Skippers also got some strong pitching and fielding in the loss, as West finished the day with just three hits altogether.
“We were off-balance all day. On Saturday night, we hit the ball all around the park, but today we just could not find a rhythm and it was frustrating. I know our team can hit,” Bessette said.
West beat Cumberland 7-2 on opening day. Cote allowed just two runs on five hits while striking out 11 batters. Lyndsey Brandow led the way at the plate with a pair of RBI. Healy, Sofia Marrella, Vicky DiPippo and Nicole Silvestri also knocked in runs.
West improved to 2-0 to start the season with the win on Monday. Although the bats went cold, Bessette was pleased with the team’s performance overall and is relieved to see the Falcons get off to a 2-0 start in a competitive Division I race.
In this league, a W is a W. You either get it done or you don’t. Paige threw for 11 strikeouts again. I was hoping that this would be a day that we could get her some rest and put some other girls out there, but she is a warrior and she didn’t want to go out,” said Bessette.
