The Cranston West and Toll Gate girls swimming teams had a late season battle prior to the division meets this weekend, and the Falcons would swim to the 60-31 victory.

West’s relay team of Victoria Badger, Zuzanna Bajer, Bianca Asencio and Milan Cesana won the 200 medley relay, while Toll Gate’s Katelyn Watson won the 200 freestyle.

Oce Lowe won the individual medley for the Titans while Cesana won the 50 free for West. Asencio won the 100 fly, while Cesana won the 100 free.

Lowe would later win the 500 free while Watson took first in the backstroke. Bajer won the breaststroke for West.

West’s relay team of Laura Silva, Emma Lancelotta, Alexa Hogan and Julia Levy won the 200 free. Levy, Cesana, Bajer and Asencio combined to win the 400 free relay for West.

West coach Jared Ambrifi has been pleased with both the boys and girls programs, who will each be sending swimmers to the divisions and likely state meets despite spending the season away from their home pool. Park View, which hosts both East and West, has seen its pool shut down for the majority of the winter season.

“This season has been tough. Our home pool has been closed so instead of being able to practice for two hours a day we have only been able to do an hour a day. They’re doing their best to embrace it and everybody is working as hard as they can. We’re proud of how much they’ve been improving,” said Ambrifi.

West has been well represented at states the past two seasons and Ambrifi believes that experience will help the kids made a push this weekend.

“It helps them a lot. They have never had to deal with anything like this before. Some kids swim year round, but some don’t and start fresh each year. For those kids especially, we’ve been very happy with how much they’ve improved,” said Ambrifi.

Toll Gate coach Shana Willis is expecting state champion Lowe to have another big championship season for the Titans.

“The kids have been competing and improving throughout the year. Oce has qualified and has worked very hard these past four years. She’s a hard worker and deserves everything that she has accomplished,” said Willis.

The Titans have been rebuilding this winter after graduating a large core. Although the results have varied, Willis has been encouraged by the improved times and is looking forward to seeing how the girls progress next winter.

“They’ve improved tremendously. They have all trimmed off many seconds off their times. We had a lot of girls this year that are new to swimming so to teach them how to swim competitively has been a challenge, but they’ve accepted the challenge and have worked very hard,” said Willis. “Their times have improved and next year they will be starting off with an advantage rather than a disadvantage with that experience.”
