“Who’s Zoomin’ Who?”

This was the title of a great song, sung by Aretha Franklin. Zooming in the song refers to someone trying to pull the wool over someone else’s eyes.

Zooming is also the term for the way some meetings were held during the pandemic. It’s done on your computer. Warwick has continued to conduct their City Council meetings via zoom.

Why? Good question! They say it’s for safety sake. If you’ve ever been to a City Council meeting, you know that the City Council Chamber is huge. It would be easy to socially distance. That combined with mask wearing would make it perfectly safe.

How can we say that our children can go back to school but still continue to have the meetings remote? I’ve been on the last few meetings I can’t help but think that we are getting zoomed.

Having the meetings remotely has a lot of perks for the City Council. They are in the comfort of their own homes. During the meetings, they are eating, taking to family and even carrying on conversations among themselves. How can they do that? Simple, they hit the mute button.

The meetings have gotten more contentious. Like anything else, people have a false sense of bravado when they are not face to face with someone. Not only are some council people rude to the citizens of Warwick that Zoom in, they are incredibly rude to some members. It’s actually turned into grade school bullying.

As a citizen, you don’t have the same opportunities to make a point on zoom. You say your opinion on something and are met with blank stares. No response, no counterpoint, nothing. It some instances some members actually aren’t even listening. They let the meeting drag on and push stuff through when no one is listening. One meeting several weeks ago, went on until 1:15 a.m. A gentleman that had stayed on Zoom until the bitter end wasn’t allowed to speak!

If you care about what’s happening in Warwick, you need to contact your councilperson and demand that they go back to in-person meetings. If you don’t know who it is, just call City Hall and ask. Each member is listed on WarwickRI.gov.

I think Zoom should always be offered for the elderly or people that would have trouble getting to a meeting, but no longer the only way. The City Council members need to stop hiding behind their computers and do the job they promised to do!
