Why posture is important

Sit Up! You owe it to your health. Bad positioning of your head results in many biomechanical conditions and limitations.. The autonomic functions of our brain and nervous system such as general mood and our visceral state, can be affected by misalignments of the neck, improper posture and poor sleeping habits. Dysfunction of the vertebral muscles and joints can occur subtly, over a long period of time and in an injury or causative episode. Symptoms can range from general neck discomfort and headache to vertigo/dizziness, loss of balance, inability to concentrate, pain, numbness and weakness into the extremity (shoulder/arm). Best biomechanical function is achieved when the skull and spine are maintained in a neutral position when performing all activities, especially more relaxed activities and postures requiring long maintained positions, including phone use, sleep posture, driving posture or with lifting and carrying objects. Long periods of poor posture and improper repetitive movements result in bad biomechanics which trigger muscle and joint dysfunction. Proper posture with all activities is vital to preserving musculoskeletal function and health. Dr. L’Europa has mastered the techniques that preserve our spine health and would like to continue to share with the public the importance of proper posture and biomechanics. Dr. L’Europa says, “when using your cell phone: Look straight ahead with your head pulled back so that your ears are directly over your shoulders, then tuck your chin so that the upper teeth are parallel (level) to the floor. Raise the phone screen up to the level of your chin. Your eyes will fall comfortably 15 degrees off the horizontal plane looking at your screen. Do not drop your chin into the chest.”
