The legacy of famed Seidel’s Sanctuary lives on!

Located off Hall Street in the quiet village of Fiskeville, the picturesque fishing hole has been the sight of many memorable moments – and special family stories - through the years.

But gone are the days of the Seidel’s Trout Derby, which annually featured a breakfast for upwards of 300 kids courtesy of the neighboring Phenix Sportsmen’s Club that set up its once-famed “Chuck Wagon” on the banks of the small storied sanctuary.

Likewise, the generous Seidel family, which owns the pristine property in Cranston located near the West Warwick line, for years showed its generosity and love for children by buying bicycles, toys and games they raffled off.

Moreover, Seidel’s Sanctuary is the state’s only kids fishing for anglers 14 and under and is stocked annually by the Rode Island Department of Environmental Management.

In keeping with tradition, Seidel’s Sanctuary was again a special spot for another family story, namely the DelFino family of Johnston.

“Wow, this place is certainly special,” Richard J. DelFino Jr. offered on trout season Opening Day. “No wonder people rave about Seidel’s Sanctuary!”

For DelFino, his son Richard III and grandson’s Richard IV and Luca, Seidel’s Sanctuary provided the perfect place for a family fishing expedition.

From the time they arrived - and left - the DelFino’s were the only family at Seidel’s Sanctuary.

However. there was family fun aplenty for the pre-ten brothers who as “Grandpa” and his son – former Johnston Town Councilman Richard – so proudly noted: “they unhooked their catch and tossed the trout back into the water for other children to catch.”

Furthermore, as the elder DelFino mused: “Now we’re part of the history here; I know where we’ll be on Opening Day 2024.”
