Zoomobile makes stop at Central Library

Posted

On Saturday, Feb. 15, close to a dozen children had an up-close opportunity to see and learn about certain animals.

Gracie Carreiro, education program instructor from Roger Williams Park Zoo, brought animals and games for the children during the Zoomobile’s visit.

Starting with a game of “Jeopardy!” focused on fields, the ocean and other natural locations, the children all took turns asking questions. After each child had had two turns, Carreiro moved onto the animals.

She made sure to assure the children she would never bring an animal that would hurt or scare them.

“Our animals love people. They never bite, but we still have to be cautious, because anything with teeth can bite,” she warned the children.

The animals she brought for this visit included a rabbit named Split, an Eastern Box Turtle named Paris and an Eastern King Snake called Priscilla.

She explained what the diet is for each animal, as well as their respective habitats and life expectancies.

“Tortoises can live for a very long time. You need to plan your life for this,” she said.

When she told the children how a snake eats, that really impressed them.

“A snake can unhinge its jaw by 190 degrees and eat another snake or other field animals. That would be like if I could unhinge my jaw and eat a whole watermelon,” she said.
