As a recently retired Coast Guard officer with 20 years of service, 15 of those in a command position, I understand the immense responsibility that comes with leadership in public safety. That is why, as a resident of Cranston, I am extremely troubled about Major Todd Patalano’s decision to pursue political office while serving as the second-in-command at the Cranston Police Department.

Public safety is a full-time commitment, not a role that can be divided between other pursuits. While Major Patalano may not have outright neglected his duties, the very nature of his decision raises serious concerns about his ability to effectively safeguard our community if his attention is split between his duties as a Major and his political ambitions.

In such a critical leadership position, the residents of Cranston expect and deserve someone who is completely focused on their safety. Running for public office is a demanding pursuit, and it inevitably diverts time, energy, and attention from the essential responsibility of keeping our community safe.

This is not a minor concern—it is about ensuring that our police leadership remains singularly committed to protecting us, especially in these challenging times.

Given the gravity of his position, Major Patalano should make a choice: either step down to fully pursue his political ambitions or suspend his campaign and dedicate his complete attention to his role in the Cranston Police Department. The safety of Cranston’s residents cannot afford divided focus or part-time leadership. We need someone in this crucial role who is 100% committed to keeping our community safe.
