CWLL, CELL All-Stars in thick of state brackets

Four Cranston Little League teams battled in their respective state tournaments this paAst week as they look to advance to the regional brackets. Here is a look at where our teams stand.

The Cranston Western 12’s won their opening matchup in a tight 2-1 victory. Macin Galligan was strong on the mound tossing five innings and allowing just one run while striking out seven batters. Damian Minyetti threw an inning in relief and added another strikeout.

Galligan led the way at the plate, knocking in a pair of runs in the fourth inning to put CWLL head after falling behind 1-0. Despite being held to just three hits overall, CWLL was able to hold on to the win down the stretch.

South Kingstown edged the 12’s the following game 5-3 to drop them to the losers bracket. Casey Carbone pitched 4 ⅔ innings and struck out four batters while Minyetti added two more in relief.

Carbone and Tommy Casali knocked in runs on offense while Shamus McConnell got three hits and scored a run.

The CWLL 11’s won a pair of games over the weekend to punch their ticket to this Thursday’s state championship matchup.

CWLL opened the state tournament with a 6-4 win over Cumberland. JJ Hamilton went 2-for-3 with two RBI while Ashton Pelagalli and Aydenn Reyes also knocked in runs.

Nolan Winters got the win on the mound, pitching 5 ⅓ innings and picking up five strikeouts.

CWLL would come back and beat Bristol on a 6-5 walk-off victory the following round to earn a spot in the championship.

The 11’s were down 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Winters would hit a two-run single to get the comeback win. Jacoby Cruz, Colton Elias and Pelagalli all knocked in runs at the plate, while Hamilton and Brad Dempsey combined for five strikeouts on the mound. Hamilton allowed just one run on one hit across five innings of work. The title matchup is slated for Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Carberry Field in Cranston.

The CWLL 10’s also picked up a pair of wins to advance to their state championship game.

The 10’s won the opening game in a 9-7 shootout over Cumberland. CWLL mounted a five-run lead, but almost saw it slip away thanks to a late game surge by Cumberland, however, the club was able to hang on late to secure the win.

John Durante and Brayden Leveillee each recorded two RBI while Nicholas Ruggieri, Naz Benzan and Will Moretta also knocked in runs on offense.

Kameron Monahan pitched four innings and struck out eight batters while Benzan and Brooklyn Bank combined for five strikeouts in just two innings.

CWLL then beat Westerly 5-3 to advance to the championship round. Trailing 3-1 heading into the fifth innings, the 10’s would rally to get the comeback win.

Benzan started things off with a two-run triple, while Monahan knocked in a run on single and Maximus Conte hitting another across the plate. Moretta also knocked in a run in the second inning to get CWLL on the board.

Benzan threw four innings on the mound and allowed three runs while striking out seven. Bank pitched two innings of relief and picked up two strikeouts while allowing no runs.

The Cranston East Juniors team went 1-2 in its state bracket to see its summer come to a close.

CELL picked up an 8-5 win over Burrillville and was led by Braden Paesano with two RBI while Anthony Pimental, S Maynard, Brayden Enright and J Xayapanya also knocked in runs. Harrison Fisher got the win on the mound, pitching 5 1/3 innings and recording eight strikeouts.

CELL then lost in back to back games. South Kingstown picked up the 5-0 shutout win then Barrington would also shut out CELL, 1-0. Paesano struck out five batters against SK while Eddy McClung allowed just one run on one hit while striking out seven.
