On the evening of Feb. 27, the cafeteria at Cranston High School West, was bustling with activities to help their fellow classmate, junior Mia Marcello, who was competing to be the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Student of the Year for 2017. The most popular event that night was the Hot Dog Eating Contest in which a dozen people entered, followed closely by the Pie in the Face fundraiser. They also raised funds through the sales of hot dogs.
The hot dogs and buns were donated by Shaw’s Market and Olneyville NY System, and the pie crusts were donated by Crystal Sparkman from Bake.Eat.Love.
The competition requires the students to raise as much money as possible, by planning a wide variety of fundraising events. Each student sets their own personal goal for fundraising, and this year Marcello has set a goal of $40,000 to raise during numerous events and promotions.
