The Cranston Western 9/10-year-old all-star team battled out of the loser’s bracket to the District 1 championship game Saturday, but saw its title dreams dashed by Johnston 14-6 in extra innings.
Western, playing without one of its top players in Jason Patalano who was injured prior to the first pitch, tied the game at six in the fourth inning with two runs, and the game stayed that way until Johnston broke it open in a big way in the top of the seventh. It scored eight runs in the extra frame, as the first seven batters reached base.
Still, it was a solid showing by Western, which won three games in the tournament. Johnston was the only team to get the best of Western.
