A man police say is a member of a Providence gang has been arrested on drug and weapons charges.

Chantha Sang, 34, of 289 Pontiac Ave., second floor, in Cranston, is charged with manufacturing/possession/delivery of cocaine, carrying dangerous weapons when committing a crime of violence, and possession of a stolen firearm.

He was taken into custody on Sept. 4 and held without bail over the weekend after being arraigned before a justice of the peace. A formal arraignment was held Tuesday in Third District Court, at which time he was again denied bail. A bail hearing is planned for Sept. 21.

“Over the course of the past several weeks, members of the Cranston Police Special Investigations Unit developed information that a known member of the Providence-based street gang ‘Providence Street Boys’ was selling Molly (MDMA) and cocaine from his residence,” reads a press release from Cranston Chief of Police Col. Michael Winquist. “Special Investigations Detectives, with the assistance of Investigators from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), conducted surveillance and made several controlled purchases of narcotics from [the residence].”

Detectives executed a search warrant at the location on Sept. 4, according to the chief, and seized approximately 37.2 grams of cocaine, $2,176 in cash, a stolen handgun, ammunition, and “several other items related to the illegal manufacture and distribution of narcotics.”

“I commend the work of the detectives and agents who conducted this investigation,” Winquist states in the release. “Targeting those who deal narcotics and carry guns while engaged in gang activity in our neighborhoods is, and will continue to be, a top priority of the Cranston Police Department.”
