Road rage incident plays out in parking lot of police HQ

Five adults and two juveniles have been charged after what police say was a dispute over the sale of a motor vehicle escalated into a road rage incident – one that reached its conclusion in the parking lot of the Cranston Police Department’s headquarters.

According to a press release from Police Chief Colonel Michael J. Winquist, officers responded to a report of a disturbance at 493 Farmington Ave. shortly before 4 p.m. on March 12. Upon arrival, officers learned that Terry Luongo, 18, of 88 Unit St. in Providence, had been assaulted following a dispute over the sale of a car. The suspects had reportedly fled the scene in an Acura.

Roughly an hour later, officers saw a Nissan Maxima pursue an Acura into the front parking lot of the department’s Garfield Avenue headquarters. The scene that unfolded was captured on surveillance video, which the department has since posted on its Facebook page.

According to the chief’s release, the Maxima’s driver – later identified as Terry Lee Jones, 39, of 21 Searle St. in Providence – had parked at the entrance to prevent the Acura from leaving the parking lot.

Jones, accompanied by Dontez Lamore Towns, 22, of 21 Searle St. in Providence, Luongo and two juveniles, then “exited the Nissan and ran aggressively toward the Acura.” The driver of the latter vehicle, later identified as Jose Escalante, 22, of 295 Smith St. in Cranston, “accelerated in reverse, at a high rate of speed, nearly striking” the group led by Jones.

Luongo and Towns “intentionally struck the Acura with their feet and hands as it passed them by,” and Escalante “accelerated forward out of the parking lot, almost striking two vehicles that were also exiting.”

“It was later learned that some of the occupants of both vehicles were the same individuals that were involved in the assault on Farmington Avenue,” the release states.

Luongo, Jones, Towns, Escalante and Jean C. Hernandez, 19, of 28 Lawrence St., Cranston, were all charged with disorderly conduct in connection with the two incidents.

The two juveniles were also charged with disorderly conduct and released to the custody of their parents pending Family Court dates.
