Shore family re-opens Atwood Avenue market

Friday afternoon marked the grand opening celebration of Shore’s Market, the newest family-owned market in Cranston.

Located on Atwood Avenue, Shore’s, which is owned and operated by the Shore family, is taking over the space once occupied by Ruggieri’s, another family-owned market that closed its doors earlier this year.

“We’ve had a lot of respect for what they’ve done over the years,” said Scott Shore of the Ruggieris. The Shore family, which also owns and operates the first Shore’s Market in North Providence, took over the space two months ago; renovations lasted about a month and they opened their doors on Aug. 30.

Scott, who operates both locations with his father Don and his brother Bob, said they chose the Cranston location for their second market because it was the right deal and matched up with what they do in North Providence.

Friday’s celebration included a ribbon cutting with Mayor Allan Fung, Cranston Chamber of Commerce members and members of Economic Development. Former Providence Mayor Buddy Cianci was also on hand, signing bottles of his Mayor’s Own Sauce from Catanzaro, greeting customers and even taking a few minutes to investigate some canned tomatoes sold in the store.

“It’s fantastic to have the Shore family here in Cranston. They’ve been doing such a great job up in North Providence,” said Fung. “And to keep it a family-run business means a lot to the community. Ruggieri’s was such a longstanding partner [in Cranston]. To keep it a family business with specialty products is really important.”

Kristen Catanzaro, who owns and operates Catanzaro Food Products out of Pawtucket, has been a vendor in Shore’s since she started her company 12 years ago. She also worked with Ruggieri’s.

“It’s nice that it remained a family business like Ruggieri’s,” said Catanzaro. “I commend the acquisition, the sale.”

She also spoke highly of the Shore family.

“The relationship that we have as a vendor has been wonderful,” said Catanzaro.

Shore’s was started by Scott and Bob’s great-grandfather Max and was taken over by their grandfather Irving. Now they apply the same business sense and technique with their father.

“We try to work like a small business; we’re here all the time,” said Scott. “We both have to work.”

“We try to do things the old-fashioned way,” said Bob, pointing out that many of their Shore’s products are made on site every day. For example, they grind fresh hamburger multiple times a day and make their own pork, chicken and turkey sausage in the meat department. Some other homemade products include chicken salad, tuna salad, soups, lasagnas, meatballs and Sheppard’s Pie. When asked what makes Shore’s different, Bob said “freshness and service.”

As for their experience in Cranston, so far, the Shore brothers say feedback has been “outstanding” and the community has been very welcoming.
