Bill Cosby conducted his band at the Newport Jazz Festival.
Director Blake Edwards received an award at the Rhode Island International Film Festival. His wife, Julie Andrews, accepted the award on the stage of the Columbus Theatre when he became ill.
I had a chance to interview both Cosby and Andrews. Cosby was arrogant. Andrews was as gracious as anyone I’ve ever interviewed.
Andy Long reviewed “Thee Producers” on Broadway for me. He loved Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick as Max and Leo.
Cranstonian Tony Annicone directed “When the Cat’s Away” at Newport Playhouse.
Theatre-by-the-Sea presented “The King and I.” Brown Summer Theatre presented “The Quilters.”
Gamm presented “The Tempest,” with Tony Estrella playing Stephano and Sam Babbit as Prospero.
Walter Matthau and Jill Clayburgh starred in “First Monday in October.” Ben Gazzara, Audrey Hepburn and John Ritter starred in “They All Laughed.”
The Flying Karmazov Brothers were such a hit at Trinity, they were held over.
Sha Na Na and Sergio Franchi closed Warwick Musical Theatre’s summer season.
Rhodes-on-the-Pawtuxet was bringing country music to its Sunday afternoon clambakes.
Admission to the Rocky Hill Fair was $3.75 for adults and 50 cents for kids. Wrestling was the big draw, with the Moondogs facing off against Andre the Giant and Tony Garea. Lines were long at the DeCiantis Brothers ice cream booth.
“West Side Story” was at Theatre-by-the-Sea.
Ozzy Osborne was at the Ocean State Theatre (now PPAC). Tickets were $7.50 and $8.50. Tom Petty and Pat Benetar played the Civic Center. Tickets were $8.50 and $9.50.
