Nutrition workshops focus on the benefits of healthy eating. Topics include making smart food choices; shopping healthy on a budget; and healthy cooking with farm fresh local vegetables and fruits.
Parkinson’s Disease Support Group
Friday, Aug. 7 at 9:30 a.m.
Facilitator: Maryellen Thibodeau, American Parkinson’s Association
Many people find that support groups are tremendously effective in helping them cope with the day-to-day realities of having Parkinson’s disease. Our facilitator is the coordinator for the American Parkinson’s Association and has implemented support groups throughout the state. The Parkinson’s Disease Support Group meets on the first Friday of each month at 9:30 a.m.
Living Well Rhode Island: Chronic Disease Self-Management Program
Mondays beginning Aug. 17-Sept. 28
9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Information and support to manage chronic disease such as diabetes, heart problems, respiratory illness, arthritis, COPD, cancer, etc., are essential to living a better life. By attending this valuable, free, six-session workshop for those age 60 and older, attendees will learn how to manage their chronic disease conditions and chronic pain. Registration is required. Upon successfully completing the program, participants will receive a workbook and relaxation CD. Call 401-780-6000 to reserve your spot.
Summer Picnic
Mayor Allan Fung invites the community to a Summer Picnic at Pawtuxet Park, along scenic Pawtuxet Cove, on Friday, Aug. 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The park is located on Narragansett Parkway in Pawtuxet Village. Live entertainment will be provided by The Honeymooners from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The day’s menu includes hamburgers and hot dogs, baked beans; Confreda Farms corn, salad, strawberry shortcake, watermelon, lemonade and water. Reservations are required, and seating it limited. Call 401-780-6204. On-site parking or transport is provided from the senior center.
Senior Games 2015
Registration is now open for the 2015 Senior Games. The Cranston Department of Senior Services welcomes all New England participants who are 55 years of age or older to join in the 20th annual competition. The various events are scheduled from Sept. 29 through Oct. 3. Athletes can compete in multiple events such as track and field, swimming, bowling, bocce, billiards, cycling, pickle ball, javelin throw, a golf tournament, tennis, and three-on-three basketball.
