The city’s public schools need a qualified applicant to fill a vacant Ward 2 seat on the School Committee.

“The Cranston School Committee is made up of six members as well as a citywide chairperson,” according to a press release from the district. “The Board works closely with the Cranston Public Schools administration developing an annual budget, creating and overseeing implementation of district policies, and supporting the work of students and schools. Board members are present and oftentimes speak at district events throughout the year.”

Any candidates interest interested in applying for the open Ward 2 seat must submit their resume to either School Committee Chairperson Michael Traficante (at mtraficante@nellmct.com) or Deborah Hayden at (dhayden@cpsed.net).

Applicant names will be accepted until June 24; and all interested candidates will be asked to speak during a public School Committee meeting on June 27 in the Cranston High School East Auditorium, when the sitting School Committee members are expected to choose an applicant.

“This seat was vacated back in April when Krissy Haroian was (appointed to) the City Council seat that Aniece Germain vacated,” Coward explained Tuesday. “When two people ran for the seat back in May, each got three votes and there was no majority so it was a resolution last night to go back out to advertise again and do the process over again.”

The School Committee tied 3-3 while voting on a pair of candidates in May. Those candidates, Christopher Maxwell and Conner Mathis split the vote.

School Committee members Buddy Croft, Frank Ritz and Anthony Melillo voted for Maxwell; while Committee Chairperson Mike Traficante, Vice Chair Domenic Fusco and Keith Catone voted for Mathis.

“Per city charter, if the opening occurs more than 6 months after the previous election,  the Committee will appoint someone to fill that seat,” Fusco, who represents Ward 3, explained. “We tried to do it last month, however the vote ended in a 3-3 tie between the two candidates that were actively still in the running. Since no one on the committee was willing to move off their vote, (Traficante) decided we need to re-advertise and do the process again. We will see where it goes from there.”
