Xaco Taco for modern Mexican

If you want some originality in your Mexican food, take a trip to Providence’s Xaco Taco, where exotic cocktails, innovative food, two killer desserts, and great atmosphere greet you with open arms.

You’ll find a clientele of young moderns filling the patio tables and huge indoor/outdoor bar, while couples and families enjoy to large dining room.

The kitchen is separated by a large truck that for some strange reason doesn’t seem out of place. It is not unusual to hear singing from the chefs behind the counter.

Margaritas, reasonably priced at $11 and $12 are popular, including a sampler of classic, mango and watermelon. Of course, they have Mexican beer.

You must start with the large bowl of corn chips and avocado dip, but don’t fill up on them because there is so much more to indulge.

Xaco Taco is famous for its-you guessed it-Tacos. The tortillas are handmade daily with organic and non-gmo white corn.

You may order them individually, as a platter, or a couple with rice and beans.

My favorite is the Lobster Esquites ($9.29) which is filled with a large, tasty serving of butter poached lobster, corn, serrano crema, queso Cotija, and chili de arbo.

Joyce and I love the Shrimp Diablo ($4.79) with sauteed shrimp, Seared queso, salsa ranchera, and a slice of avocado.

Joyce also likes the Wild Mushroom ($4.), with sauteed mushrooms, rajas poblanas, queso fresca, and arbol frita.

Other choices include cauliflower, chicken, cod, steak, braised beef, roasted and grilled pork.

Sides of beans and rice ($5), corn ($6), and our favorite, spicy pickled vegetables ($450) are nice additions.

Save room for dessert. There are only two items, and they are both winners.

Xaco Taco is famous for their Churro Doughnuts ($6.50), four cinnamon and sugar fried dough, with Mexican chocolate sauce or dulce de leche on the side for dipping

Their new special is Peaches and Cream Tres Leches Cake ($8), a creamy horchata soaked sponge cake, honey poached peaches, cinnamon-almond crisps, and Mexican whipped cream.

Xaco Taco is located at 370 Richmond St. in Providence’s Jewelry District.

Edgewood, Pawtuxet and Governor Francis residents are familiar with the area, as most travel down Narragansett Boulevarde to Eddy St. to Richmond to take the asy route into Downcity to go to PPAC, Trinity and the AMP.

Their phone number is 228-8286. Order online at xacotacori.com.
