90-plus reasons to celebrate

Posted

Mayor Allan Fung, Cranston Department of Senior Services Executive Director Sue Stenhouse and members and staff at the Cranston Senior Enrichment Center, took a moment to honor local seniors who celebrated their 90th through 102nd birthdays this past year. Over 120 seniors and their guests joined in the fun marking this significant milestone in their lives.

This year’s theme – “You’re never too old to make your mark!” – noted adults throughout history who are credited with great contributions, all made beyond the age of 55 years. Inspiring seniors included Winston Churchill, Benjamin Franklin, Grandma Moses, Ronald Reagan, Diana Nyad, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Duncan Hines and Ray Kroc.

As noted by George Eliot, “It is never too late, no matter how old you get because anytime or any point in your life you can always have a chance to make a difference. You can always make a change for the better, no matter what background you derived from. It is never too late to shine, never.”

Four of the honorees – Mary Scorpio (101), Helen Rathbun (101), Margaret DiMuccio (100) and Thomas Mimnaugh – are all centenarians, with Tom marking his 102nd birthday this year.

Each birthday honoree was presented with a citation from the mayor and a commemorative keepsake booklet, for the recipients to fill with achievements and lessons learned in their lives.
