STONES TURNED
Cranston police are still looking for information about the overturning of about 25 gravestones in the Pocasset Cemetery over the Labor Day weekend.
The damage to the Dyer Avenue graveyard was discovered on Tuesday, Sept. 2, and is believed to have occurred some time between then and the night of Friday, Aug. 30.
“It appears to have been a random thing,” said State Police Lt. Matthew Moynihan. “There were no particular names or ethnicities involved to indicate it was a hate crime.”
Moynihan said that the Pocasset representatives have always had minor damage done, often so minor they don’t bother to report it, but this incident was unusual in the number of headstones involved. The cemetery estimates the damage will cost about $6,500 to repair, which could have been higher if they did not do most of the repairs themselves.
As of now, there are no surveillance cameras at the cemetery, so Moynihan said patrols of the area will be increased.
“We still have no suspects for the incident,” he said, “and we would appreciate it if anyone who knows something about it to give us a call.”
Direct all information to Detective Capt. Sean Carmody at 401-477-5143.
