No, this is not a setup for a joke – it’s what actually happened this past Saturday night at the Pub on Park in Cranston, where Doreen Collins was roasted and inducted into the Rhode Island Comedy Hall of Fame (RICHOF).

The Hall of Fame is the brainchild of comedian and musician “Rockin’” Joe Hebert, and was established in August 2011.

According to the RICHOF’s website, the organization’s goal is “to recognize those individuals who have made outstanding contributions to Rhode Island comedy.”

To date, the other inductees have included Charlie Hall, John Perrotta, Frank O’Donnell, Tom Cotter, and now Collins. Collins also holds the distinct honor of being the first female inducted.

With the dais full of men waiting to roast her, she took her hits like a pro.

“I’ve really only known Doreen for about a year, personally. But, her career and impact on comedy here in Rhode Island are extensive,” Hebert said.

Acting as host of the evening, Charlie Hall started off with a viewing of an episode of Collins’ television show “Rhode Bytes,” which used to air on Channel 10 Saturday nights after “Saturday Night Live.” Collins also was a member of the now defunct Ocean State Follies.

The roasters included Hall, Hebert, Jim Carroll, her brother Billy Collins, Ron Cesario, Cicilline and Jaehnig.

Cicilline recalled the days when Collins first worked in his office when he was mayor of Providence.

“She was my scheduler. But she would not only tell me what events I was attending, she would act them out for me,” he said.

Jaehnig spoke about the night he met Collins at a Channel 10 holiday party.

“She came up to me and said, ‘Dan, we are colleagues.’ She had a look on her face as if she was having a seizure. My wife was concerned,” he said.

All the roasters shared stories that were both embarrassing and heartwarming. While at times there were off-color barbs, all of it was in good fun. The love and respect the roasters have for her was clear.

Collins said she was “flattered, humbled and honored to be the first woman inducted.” She also gave back as good as she got, telling tales of each of the roasters and how much they meant to her.

A portion of proceeds from ticket sales went to benefit Providence Animal Rescue League.
