It’s only the third year that the Rhode Island Chapter of the Red Cross has been teaming up with cities and towns for free smoke alarm installations, but Cranston has already set a record.

There have been more than 100 appointments scheduled across the city, which is a new high for the state according to R.I. Chapter Senior Director Elizabeth McDonald. The Cranston Fire Department and Red Cross volunteers will visit homes this Monday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. as part of the Red Cross Home Fire Campaign.

“We’re so excited about partnering for this event because we know smoke alarms save lives,” McDonald said.

Bank Newport, which recently opened a branch in Cranston, is underwriting the smoke alarms, according to McDonald. St. Vincent De Paul and Rotary have also helped spread the word, while Clean Care of New England is donating “space, staff and volunteers.”

McDonald said the need for volunteers, and more applicants, is still strong. Volunteers, who would help install alarms, can still register at www.redcross.org/local/rhode-island/volunteer. According to the Red Cross press release, “Sixty percent of house fire deaths occur in homes with no working smoke alarms.” Since the genesis of the Home Fire initiative, more than 450,000 smoke alarms have been installed across all 50 states and four U.S. territories.
