The second annual “Birdies For Boobies” golf tournament, a fundraising event for the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation, will take place at North Kingstown Golf Course on Aug. 18.

“Saving the girls one cup at a time,” reads a flyer promoting the event and raising awareness of breast cancer, the third leading cause of death from cancer in Rhode Island.

The first Birdies For Boobies event raised more than $9,000 for Gloria Gemma and it started with Diane Stamp’s diagnosis in May of 2011. A Cranston native, Stamp’s stage two breast cancer stunned her family.

“It was a complete shock,” said Stamp’s daughter, Leah Stamp. “This can happen to anyone at any age at any time. That’s what inspired us.”

Leah and her husband, Rob McCaskill, seeing the outpouring of support from the community and Diane Stamp’s employer, Hasbro, Inc., decided they wanted to do something to help. Neither Leah Stamp nor Rob McCaskill had ever organized a charity event.

“I had just been to a charity golf tournament,” said McCaskill. “My father had some experience planning golf tournaments, so we decided to go for it.”

Diane Stamp worried that Leah and Rob, who contributed their own money to reserve the golf course and event facility, wouldn’t be able to draw the number of golfers needed to break even.

“I thought we might have to bail them out,” said Stamp. “But they really pulled it off.”

More than 130 golfers participated in the 2011 Birdies For Boobies tournament and approximately 200 people attended the dinner, at which prizes were raffled off.

“This year the event is earlier in the season so it will be warmer and it’s on a Saturday rather than a Sunday,” McCaskill said.

McCaskill and Leah Stamp planned Birdies For Boobies as a fundraiser for the Pawtucket-based Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation because they wanted the money they raised to benefit local individuals and families coping with breast cancer diagnosis, treatment and survivorship.

Earlier this year, Diane Stamp was featured in the Foundation’s “Our Heroes” annual Survivor Fashion Show, a signature event. Stamp is currently helping her daughter and son-in-law organize the tournament in ways she wasn’t able to last year, due to her challenging treatment regimen. Help from Leah’s brother Eric, sister Bethany, and Bethany’s longtime boyfriend Justin Houseman has turned this year’s event into a family effort.

“We’re just thrilled that Birdies For Boobies is happening again this year,” said Maria Gemma, executive director of the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation. “Robert McCaskill and Leah Stamp have taken their support for Diane Stamp and extended it to include people all over Rhode Island whose lives have been touched by breast cancer.”

Like the Stamps, the Gemmas have made fighting cancer a family affair.

“Coming as my brothers and sisters and I do from a family who lost its matriarch, my mother, Gloria J. Gemma to breast cancer 10 years ago, the efforts of Diane Stamp’s family are deeply appreciated,” said Gemma. The money raised at this event will directly impact people all over the state.

Registered participants should check in at noon on Aug. 18 at North Kingstown Golf Course, located at 615 Callahan Road. Tee-off is at 1 p.m. Those wishing to attend the dinner but not play in the tournament may do so for $40 per person.
