A search for a missing senior citizen turned tragic Saturday when the man’s body was discovered in Cranston.

Last week, the Johnston Police Department requested the public's assistance in locating Kenneth Stedman, a 69-year-old male who was reported missing by his family on February 10 and who was last seen at the McDonald's restaurant at 1377 Atwood Avenue in Johnston.

The call to action advised that Stedman was last seen wearing brown pants, a yellow shirt and a navy blue coat. He was operating his gray 2008 Ford Focus and was known to frequent Barnes & Noble bookstores, McDonald's and Burger King restaurants and possibly public libraries.

According to a press release issued on Monday from the Cranston Police Department on Saturday, February 17, at approximately 6:50 p.m., the department received information from a person who stated that he believed he saw a body floating in the water of Spectacle Pond near the back of Stop & Shop at 204 Garfield Avenue.

Officers responded and located the body of a white male in the water that was pulled to shore, examined and turned over to the R.I. State Medical Examiner’s Office for further investigation. Cranston Police Detectives did not identify any immediate signs of foul play at the scene.

The Cranston Police Department officially confirmed that the body recovered from Spectacle Pond on Saturday had been identified as Stedman. There was no foul play detected, with the cause of death declared as a drowning.

Assisting in the investigation were the Cranston Fire Department, R.I. State Medical Examiner’s Office and the Johnston Police Department. Mayor Fung, Colonel Winquist and the men and women of the Cranston Police Department offered their sincere condolences to the family during this very difficult time.
