City to open 6 polling places for presidential primary

Planning to cast a vote in Tuesday’s presidential primary? Be sure to check your polling place first.

The city of Cranston and the office of Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea have issued advisories noting that 144 voting locations across Rhode Island will be open for the April 26 primary – roughly one-third the number used for regular elections.

Six locations will be open in Cranston – none at schools, which will be in session.

State election officials have said a similar consolidation of polling places was done for the March 2008 presidential primary, although the total number of locations has been cut back since then. The move is meant to reduce associated costs.

Despite its late place in the primary calendar, Rhode Island has found itself highly relevant in both the Republican and Democratic contests.

Two candidates – Democratic former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and Republican Ohio Gov. John Kasich – have planned visits to the Ocean State on April 23, while Democratic U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders and Republican businessman Donald Trump are reportedly considering stops in the state. Republican U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz appears unlikely to make a local appearance.

In Cranston, the following polling places will be open:

Scottish Rite Masonic Center, 2115 Broad St. (includes those who previously voted at Edgewood Highland School, William Hall Library, the Cranston Portuguese Club, and Park View Middle School)

American Legion Auburn Post, 7 Legion Way (includes those who previously voted at the Cranston Senior Enrichment Center, Cranston High School East, Eden Park Elementary School, Waterman School, and Budlong Manor)

Arlington Manor, 50 Birch St. (includes those who previously voted at Stadium Elementary School, Arlington Elementary School, Hugh B. Bain Middle School, and Horton School)

Cranston Christian Fellowship Church, 1114 Scituate Ave. (includes those who previously voted at Orchard Farms Elementary School, Hope Highlands Elementary School, and Oaklawn Elementary School)

Kelley-Gazzerro VFW Post, 1418 Plainfield Pike (includes those who previously voted at Santa Maria Di Prata Hall, George J. Peters Elementary School, Woodridge Elementary School, and Western Hills Middle School)

Schofield Armory, 705 New London Ave. (includes those who previously voted at St. David’s on the Hill Church, Garden City Elementary School, and Glen Hills School)

The list of primary polling places in Cranston can be found here. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The Secretary of States Voter Information Center – which includes upcoming registration deadlines and election dates – can be found here. Gorbeas office can be reached at 401-222-2340 or elections@sos.ri.gov.
