Just say hello

Just to Say Hello Program is a Cranston Department of Senior Services program that provides a daily telephone call to Cranston seniors who are alone and have few family contacts.  Each day a caring volunteer will make a simple, friendly phone call at a mutually agreed time which helps relieve loneliness, enhances wellness and develops friendships.  If you know of any Cranston senior who would like to receive a daily telephone call or if you would like to be a volunteer caller contact Jennifer Kevorkian, Social Services Director, at 780-6254.

Free tax preparation for those who qualify

CCAP's 2018 VITA Tax Preparation Assistance Service provides free tax preparation for individuals and families earning less than $54,000.

Last year, CCAP's VITA program filed over 1,000 federal tax returns, helping Rhode Island families receive $1.6 million in refunds without any cost. Their VITA tax preparers are trained and certified by the IRS and will help you file your federal and state income taxes at no cost.

CCAP's tax preparation services are offered at our Cranston location: 311 Doric Avenue, Cranston, RI (lower level). Call 467-7013 today for an appointment.

Band competition to be hosted at Cranston East

Come enjoy the sights and sounds of over 20 indoor percussion & color guard groups. Cranston High School East is proud to play host for the third straight year to a New England Scholastic Band Association (NESBA) competition.

The event will be held in the gym at Cranston High School East on March 10. Adult Admission: $10; Seniors/Students: $8 and there is no admission charged for children under the age of 5. Doors open at 3 p.m.; Percussion groups start at 4 p.m. and; Color Guard groups start at 6 p.m. There will be raffles, 50/50 and a full concession stand available.

Time for Lacrosse in Cranston

The new Cranston Lacrosse Club is open for registration for Spring 2018 boys and girls lacrosse. Early registration is in full swing and you may register at their website at www.CranstonLacrosseClub.com. The early bird discount is intended to defray the cost associated with membership in US Lacrosse, participation is US Lacrosse is required to play in the Rhode Island Youth Lacrosse League (RIYLL).  This requirement mirrors years past. Registration is $150, US Lacrosse $30 and the Early Bird Discount $30. Uniform to include Jersey, Shorts/Skirt, Shirt, and Sweatshirt and $100 to be collected when practices start.

For 10 years, recreational youth lacrosse in Cranston has experienced growth. Please join in spreading the word for the Spring 2018 season. Indoor practices are planned for the second week of March, outdoor practices in April, and games beginning roughly the second week of April.

Job fairs at Panera Bread this Friday

Panera Bread will be having two hiring events this Friday, Feb. 23 at the Chapel View location. The job fairs will run from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in-store. This is part of a February-March hiring season at the Paneras across Rhode Island.

Got books?

Help is needed with the Cranston Public Library Association's May 5 book sale. Help continue this tradition by donating your gently-used (and mildew-free) items to the sale. They are currently accepting donations of books (especially nonfiction books), CDs and LPs, and DVDs during regular business hours at the Central Library and William Hall Library. They are unable to accept magazines, VHS tapes, textbooks or encyclopedias.

City summer jobs applications date announced

The Parks and Recreation Department will make available summer job applications from April 2 to May 4. Applications will be available for download on the Parks and Recreation website and for pick up at the Recreation Office. Applicants must Cranston Resident and be 16 years old at the time of employment. Forms should be submitted to the Parks and Recreation Department. Positions include camp counselor, lifeguard, pool attendant and pool maintenance. This is for new applicants only. Last year's summer employees in good standing with the department will receive a re-application form in the mail in the coming weeks.

At the Senior Center

The Michael A. Traficante Enrichment Center, located at 1070 Cranston St. will offer the following programs and activities:

New to the Senior Center is the Hi Lo Jack Card League beginning March 9 at 1 p.m. The cost is only $2 weekly. For more information and to sign up call Kathi at 780-6216 or Ray at 497-8097.

Book Club will meet on Feb. 27 at 10:30 a.m. to discuss “Out of Darkness” by Ashley Hope-Perez. The novel chronicles a love affair between a teenage Mexican American girl and a teenage African-American boy in 1930’s New London, Texas. It takes us right up to the 1937 New London School explosion.

Hypertension: Managing Your High Blood Pressure will be the topic of discussion on Feb. 28 at the Senior Center at 10 a.m. and will be conducted by the URI Pharmacy Outreach Program. Topics to include: What types of changes can you make in your life to be successful in keeping your blood pressure in a healthy range?  How much of an impact does your diet play into the equation and what are the sodium requirements for those with hypertension.

City of Cranston Tax Freeze Application Assistance will be discussed on March 2 at 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Social Services staff will be assisting with the completion of the City’s Tax Freeze application. Clients will be assisted on a “first come first served” basis. You will need to meet the following qualifications, and have the necessary documents with you:  You must reside in a single-family owner-occupies dwelling with income from all sources, less than $20,000 per year – one-person occupancy, or $23,000 per year for more than one person and Proof of household income from all sources, in the form of 1099 and W-2.

Chronic Disease Self-Management Program, called “Living Well Rhode Island,” will be held on Tuesdays from 9 to 11 a.m. beginning March 20 and ending April 21. Anyone with a chronic issue be it arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, pain etc. are invited to participate in this free evidence-based program. Topics covered during this six-session workshop include: dealing with frustration; pain & fatigue; medication & nutrition; exercise for improving strength, flexibility & endurance; evaluating new medications and more.  Upon successfully completing the program each participant will receive a certificate of completion, a relaxation CD and a gift certificate.  Space is limited so register now by calling 780-6000.

Aerobics Classes will be held Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at a fee of $4 per person. Aerobic exercise has an impact on the health of our lungs.  It is also called cardio because it gets our heart rate up, which means it allows our entire pulmonary system to increase the maximum amount of oxygen that our lungs can handle.  Aerobics tones the lungs and the heart. For more information call Kathi at 780-6216.

State Summer Jobs

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) is recruiting for a variety of seasonal employment positions at recreational facilities across the state. Rhode Island residents, ages 16 and older, are encouraged to apply.

Full-time lifeguard positions are available at all State swimming areas, including Lincoln Woods, Fort Adams and Goddard Memorial State Parks, as well as at Misquamicut, Scarborough, and East Matunuck State Beaches. Hourly rates range from $10.75 to $13.75, based on location and position level.  For more information on becoming a lifeguard or to apply, visit www.riparks.com.

Other seasonal positions available include park rangers; beach managers; laborers; recreational area assistants; and clerical support.  Visit www.riparks.com for a complete list of employment opportunities. Most positions are full-time and include weekend and holiday hours. Hourly rates range from $10.10 to $14.75. Applicants to park ranger positions at levels II and III must be 18 years of age or older.

Art Scholarships

March is Youth Art Month and in celebration, The Wickford Art Association (WAA) will present its annual Scholarship Fund awards to three Rhode Island public high school senior art students with a fourth award presented by the Rhode Island Art Educators Association in March.

Each Rhode Island public high school chooses one college-bound senior art student for consideration. The competition uses National Scholastic Standards overseen by the Rhode Island Art Educators Association. The four winning students will receive cash scholarships in the amounts of $2,500, $1,500, $1,000 and $500 to use towards college. Winners also receive a one-year membership to WAA, a fine art exhibit in our gallery and exhibit space at the 56th Wickford Art Festival, ranked the #5 fine art festival in the country. This is an excellent, resume-building opportunity for college bound students. Interested students should speak with their art teachers about submitting their portfolio for consideration.

The 2018 WAA Scholarship Program application may be downloaded at wickfordart.org/art-scholarship. Completed applications must be submitted by Feb. 28.

The Scholarship Program Exhibit is March 9 to March 16 during regular gallery hours. The Scholarship Program Awards Ceremony is on Friday, March 16, at 6:30 p.m. at the Wickford Art Association, 36 Beach Street, North Kingstown, RI.

Bowling for animals

Defenders of Animals will host their Bowling for Animals on Feb. 25 at 2 p.m. at Town Hall Bowling Lanes, 1463 Atwood Ave. in Johnston. The $20 per person donation includes two hours of bowling, a pizza and a pitcher of soda for each lane.

CCAP Head Start/Early Head Start Programs now enrolling

CCAP's Head Start /Early Head Start Programs are recruiting children from birth to 5 years old. The programs are free federally funded program serving income eligible children and families; free federally funded program serving foster children; comprehensive services for pregnant women, infants and toddlers, three to four-year olds and children who missed the Kindergarten age mandate; services are offered to children with special needs; free breakfast and lunch is provided; parent engagement opportunities; extended daycare services offered for parents who are working or in school and priority is given to families experiencing homelessness.
