Eugene A. Flaherty, 90, of Fieldstone Rd., passed away peacefully September 27, 2009 at West Bay Manor. He was the husband of the late Gertrude M. (Strong) Flaherty. They were married for 63 years. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Joseph and Catherine (Hanley) Flaherty. Mr. Flaherty was a former service manager for Boggess Buick, Heritage Buick and several other automobile dealerships for 65 years. He was on the staff of New England Tech and the R.I. Trades Shop School. He was president of Certified Appraisals Inc. and was a recognized expert on antique and classic vehicles. He was an enthusiastic golfer and was a member of East Greenwich Golf Club for 40 years and had three holes-in-one. He was a graduate of La Salle Academy in 1936 and was a World War II Army veteran serving in Burma, China and India and was discharged with a rank of captain. He is survived by four sons, Francis X. Flaherty, Associate Justice of the RI Supreme Court, of Warwick, Robert E. Flaherty, Esq., State Representative District 23, of Warwick, Daniel K. Flaherty, Esq., of Warwick and Joseph J. Flaherty, an Associated Director of the Department of Corrections, of Warwick; a daughter, Marie Flaherty Drumm, MSW, West Warwick Public Schools of Coventry; 19 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Raymond and Joseph Flaherty, Maye McGarry and Catherine White. His funeral will be Oct. 1 at 8:30 a.m. from Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 142 Centerville Rd., Warwick, with a concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Clement Church, Long St., Warwick. Burial with military honors will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.
