George’s in the winter

No Rhode Island Restaurant is more crowded in the summer than George’s of Galilee.

Six dining rooms on two floors, a Tiki bar, a take-out window, and a huge outside dining area that leads down to the beach.

But it is a cold, rainy, windy winter day in South County, and we have the urge for some fresh seafood.

Off we go down Route 4 to Route 1 to the Galilee/Jerusalem/Block Island Ferry exit to 250 Sand Hill Cove Rd. and the historic George’s of Galilee.

We made reservations, because only the downstairs dining area is open this time of year. The waitress told us it was a slow day, but we saw only a couple of empty tables. A senior couple occupied the two rocking chairs by the blazing fireplace and the bar was crowded.

George’s is celebrating their 76th anniversary by offering their famous chowder for 76 cents. We enjoyed the Rhode Island (clear) version with the large, tender pieces of clams.

I chose the Baked Seafood Trio ($27.99) with three tender, tasty scallops, a good-sized stuffed flounder and a petite baked stuffed shrimp. Because of potassium issues, I can’t have potatoes, so our helpful waitress brought me a huge dish of cole slaw.

Joyce ordered the pan seared scallops, five perfectly cooked delicacies, over a blend of bacon, corn, adobo cream sauce and cauliflower. ($31.99).

She offered me a taste without telling me it was a vegetable I didn’t like. It is one of the best tastes I have ever had. We saved a little to take home.

In other trips to George’s, we have enjoyed their fish and chips ($21.99) lobster salad roll, which is made with the claws and knuckles (the best part of the lobster) $27.99 and their Seafood Pot Pie, filled with scallops, shrimp, scrod, veggies and lobster sauce in a toasted bread bowl ($29.99).

George’s of Galilee is open seven days a week from11 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Their phone number is 783-2306, and their website is georgesofgalilee.com.
