Students of the Rhode Island Kung Fu Club put on quite a show for shoppers at Garden City Center on Saturday, February 17. As part of the lunar new year, a two week event which started Feb. 10, students donned enormous two-person costumes to perform the Lion Dance, a traditional dance to bring luck and prosperity to the homes and businesses the procession passes. Accompanied by drummers and other masked dancers, the dancers made their way all around the sidewalks of Garden City, before giving a final performance at the Garden City gazebo, during which spectators were encouraged to feed the lions lettuce on sticks, which the lions would shred and “spit” back onto members of the crowd for extra good luck.
