Movies, Concert in the Park set for sequel

If the Johnston Community Center Association’s season-opener of Movies and Concerts in the Park offered a guide, this weekend’s performance may just produce record crowds inside War Memorial Park.

“We’ve got all kinds of positives from a number of people after the movie and concert two weeks ago,” Glenn Carroll, president of the sponsoring JCCA, said. “As far as the Reggie Centracchio Quintet was concerned, many folks requested that we bring the group back next year.”

The JCCA will present its second movie and concert nights this weekend. On Saturday night, the JCCA will present its second 3-D computer-animated musical comedy film entitled Sing that was produced in 2016 by Illumination Entertainment.

Sing was directed and written by Garth Jennings, co-directed by Christopher Lourdelet and stars the voices of superstars Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Seth MacFarlane, Scarlett Johansson, John C. Reilly, Taron Egerton and Tori Kelly.

The film is about a group of animals that enter a signing competition, hosted by a koala hoping to save a theater. It also includes more than 60 songs from famous artists and also has an original song by Stevie Wonder and Ariana Grande called “Faith,” which was nominated for a Golden Globe.

In keeping with its tradition, the JCCA offers the movie – as well as popcorn especially prepared by Nicole Carroll and chilled bottled water – for free.

“All people need to do is bring their chairs, blankets and coolers if they want special snacks,” said Carroll. “We enjoy presenting these family nights we’re looking forward to another great night Saturday.”

The movie will be shown starting at 8 o’clock on a large, inflatable screen the JCCA purchased a year ago.

Concert goers will be treated to what Glenn Carroll, Vice President Mark Gilmore and other JCCA officials called “one of the most energetic entertainers we’ve ever seen” when talking about The Jesse Liam Band that will be back inside Johnston War Memorial Park for a second straight year Sunday evening.

The concert will begin at 6 p.m. and feature Jesse Liam Gauthier, a 27-year-old Rhode Island College graduate and his father Jack, a Grammy-nominated recording engineer and former producer of Dispatch who also managed blues legend Duke Robillard.

The father-and-son duo will feature their family harmony sound during Sunday’s concert as well as their full band that includes drummer Michael DeQuattro and bassist Joseph Bentley. Their deep repertoire covers songs spanning popular music from The Everly Brothers and Beattles to the current charts including Jason Mraz, Train, Bruno Mars and Jesse’s favorite album, “So Much More.”

Admission is free.
