Calling all organists! Trinity Episcopal Church in Pawtuxet Village is giving away two organs.
The manual electric Lowrey organ with a pedal board and speaker and the manual Allen organ with a pedal board are valued at approximately $1,000 each and are about 30 years old. A new owner can take one or both in return for a donation to the church.
“These are one of the earliest of electronic church organs and they produced a phenomenal sound for their day,” said Father Mitch Lindeman.
The organs were “on the forefront of mimicking or rivaling the pipe organ sound,” and with a touch of a button could launch presets or allow the tonality that usually only comes from a pipe or an old tracker organ.
The Allen organ doesn’t need too much upkeep – it requires a little furniture polish or lemon oil now and then.
“It doesn’t need voicing or tuning, it will just sit wherever you place it and do a phenomenal job,” Father Mitch said.
Father Mitch said a beginner interested in experimenting with organ sound might enjoy the Lowery, adding it has an add-on Leslie speaker that spins and is “funky.” He said it might also be a good match for a professional organist as a practice instrument.
“[The Allen] was the backup organ in our church during the time of our fire, and it worked for a long time,” Father Mitch said.
To inquire about the organs, contact Trinity Church at 941-4324 or send an email via their website, www.trinitypawtuxet.com. Father Mitch suggests a donation in the $100 range, but said it’s more important to the church community that the organs are placed with someone who will use them.
