Project Linus of RI keeps Cranston "Blanketeers" busy

Posted

Tucked into the smaller activity room at William Hall Library, on Wednesday afternoons, a group of women work diligently crocheting and knitting blankets for babies and children up to 18 years old.

This group dedicates their time, talent and materials to bring comfort, love and little pieces of their hearts to the recipients in hospitals around the state.

"I saw a flyer at the library (William Hall) and decided to check the group out. I started going about two months ago and wouldn't have stayed if it wasn't fun," said Liz Cimini.

Her college roommate taught her to knit when they were juniors. She kept it up for several years and then got out of the habit.

"About 13 years ago, my daughter, Maria decided to try knitting. Around then, Job Lot started carrying cheap yarn. That was the push I needed to start up again.  I now buy most of my yarn at Savers. In the last few months, I've found two large bags of yarn for $15 each. If I go on senior Tuesdays, they take 30% off and with my annual letter from the VA (Veteran's Administration), I get a 25% discount on Wednesdays," she said.

The group makes sure no amount of yarn, no matter how small goes to waste.

"Several months ago, I asked a friend to find an easy hat pattern for me.  I had lots of fairly small amounts of yarn that weren't enough to use for a shawl or blanket. I have no idea how many hats I've made. One of the two Marthas in the group has a contact with medical people who go to people's homes. They were looking for hats to give children.  I've brought in a couple of bags full," said Cimini.

The group is organized by Martha Sholes.
