Last week, Mayor Allan Fung gave the Key to the City and a Citation to Retired Rhode Island Air National Guardsman Technical Sgt. Greg Grutter for his acts of heroism, as he saved the lives of approximately 100 people in Afghanistan. Sgt. Grutter is a Cranston native and attended Woodridge Elementary School, Bain Middle School and Cranston High School West. He joined the Marines in 1986 and served until 1994. He also served in the R.I. Army Guard from 1996 through 1999. Sgt. Grutter returned to the military in 2004. Just recently medically retired from the Air Guard, he spent more than 19 years in the military, having been deployed to a number of locations in the Middle East. His last deployment was to Afghanistan, where he spent 19 months and went on more than 1,000 missions. He previously has earned both the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. Pictured are Mrs. Lisa Grutter, Technical Sgt. Greg Grutter and Mayor Allan Fung.
