Family members and friends of 76-year-old Angelina Cruz Hernandez, who died after being struck by a vehicle on Dyer Avenue on Jan. 11, held a vigil outside the Riverbend Apartments on Friday night.

The event served to remember Cruz Hernandez and support the family’s push to gain access to her apartment, which the complex’s management ultimately provided.

Scituate resident Alex Negron, one of Cruz Hernandez’s granddaughters who is pictured above, said family members from New York, New Jersey and Florida were among those present for the vigil.

She said her grandmother was a “farm girl from Puerto Rico” who first came to New York before settling in Rhode Island. She said her grandmother had seven children, 20 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

“It’s unfortunate how it’s gone down. Of course, we’re grieving … She lived a long life and she should have lived longer,” Negron said.

The operator involved in the accident is not facing criminal charges but has been cited for failure to yield the right way of way to a pedestrian in a crosswalk and due care by drivers, Cranston Police Maj. Todd Patalano said Tuesday. He said the investigation, conducted in conjunction with the attorney general’s office, is now considered closed.

Negron said the family has been pleased with the way police have handled the situation.

“They’ve been great, since day one,” she said.
