Titans ‘right there’ as they look to get into win column

The Toll Gate baseball team is searching for its first win as it sits at 0-6 to start the season.

Despite the tough start, Toll Gate has knocked at the door on multiple occasions with three losses coming by just one run. The Titans fell to defending champion Cumberland 6-5 and also fell to second-place South Kingstown by the same score. Crosstown rival Pilgrim held off a late Titan rally to win 5-4 in their meeting.

“We’re right there, we’re losing some close games. We just have to put all three phases together with hitting, pitching and fielding. We do one or two well but the other falters, but I’m confident we’ll put it together,” said Toll Gate coach Nick Durand.

Connor Salzillo has been strong at the plate and leads the team in average, hits and runs batted in with six. Dylan Perreault has also drove in four RBI while batting over .300 and Jamie Luna has been steady on offense as well.

Brayden Ogden and Luca Barletta have been shouldering the load on the mound. Ogden has recorded 14 strikeouts in 18 innings of work.

With five senior starters, the Titans were looking for a better April, but are hopeful that they can turn things around down the stretch. Durand believes that the team just needs to get its first win to build some momentum and ease the nerves.

“The guys are frustrated because they practice well and it just hasn’t translated to the games. Everyone is a little frustrated but they come to work every day,” Durand said. “We’re senior heavy this year so that’s why we’re disappointed, but we deal with adversity every year. They’re used to it. They have positive attitudes and I think once we get that first one, the pressure will be off and we’ll be able to play a little more free.”

Toll Gate will next face Portsmouth on Thursday on the road, then host Moses Brown on Saturday.
