Such, Falcons hold off Rebels
The Cranston West football team is rolling.
The Falcons improved to 2-0 in Division I-A on Friday evening, as three rushing touchdowns by senior running back Will Such led West past South Kingstown, 34-28.
The win marked the third straight game that West recorded at least four touchdowns, and Such was able to keep his torrid touchdown pace going this fall, as he now leads the state with 10 touchdowns and 60 points responsible for.
The Rebels got off to a good start at Cranston Stadium on Friday, with Jai Osibin rushing for a 65-yard touchdown to give visiting South Kingstown an early 7-0 lead.
However, after that long rush, it was all West for the rest of the first half.
The Falcons answered when quarterback Nick Dionizio found Cam Alves for a 9-yard touchdown to tie the game at 7 at the end of the first quarter.
West kept that momentum rolling with two more touchdowns in the second quarter. First, Such overpowered the South Kingstown defense en route to a 54-yard touchdown run, before Dionizio plunged in from one yard out to give the Falcons a 20-7 edge at the break.
Such couldn’t be stopped in the third quarter either.
He had a pair of scoring runs in the third on rushes of 66 and seven yards to give the Falcons a commanding 34-7 lead.
Then, South Kingstown would make a push.
A 47-yard touchdown run by Bobby Sprague with 1:21 left in the third quarter trimmed the Rebels’ deficit to 34-14, and a 65-yard run to pay dirt by South Kingstown’s Denzel Perry early in the fourth quarter made it 34-21.
South Kingstown then recovered an ensuing onside kick, before Osibin ran in for his second touchdown of the game to cut West’s lead to just 34-28 with 5:36 remaining.
However, despite a commendable comeback effort by the Rebels, West’s defense was able to stop South Kingstown in the final minutes to hang on for the victory.
The Falcons are now in a great spot in the standings, and they will have a chance to hand Hendricken (3-0) its first division loss on Friday in a battle between two unbeaten teams in Division I-A. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Hendricken.
