West alum's cancer fundraiser a success

Cranston High School West graduate Allie Marisi hosted her first cancer fundraiser for the American Society on Thursday, June 29 at the Santa Maria di Prata Society.

The room was decorated in pink for the Breast Cancer event, and there were tables overflowing with raffles. With Charlie Hall and the Ocean State Follies for entertainment, Marisi made sure her guests were going to have a good night.

Allie was praised by many of the attendants for her hard work and dedication to the cause.

"Allison is a true asset for this cause. Just look at how many people came. She is a blessing to everyone, she has such a big heart and big smile. She is always helping people, always extending her hand," said Dolores DiMeo Carroll.

Mayor Allan Fung was on hand to offer a few remarks as well.

"I am honored to be here to support such a worthy cause. Allie has done such a wonderful job, and it being her first event, I look forward to seeing what else she can do down the line," he said.

The crowd was a mix of friends, family and supporters.

"I had such a great time at the event, it was a great evening of fun - raising money for a great cause. But what made the night extra special was I got to spend it with my Mom, Denise who is a breast cancer survivor. Thanks to Allie and the Marisi family for helping such a great cause and to all that attended," said Ward 5 Councilman, Chris Paplauskas.

As a three-year survivor, Denise Paplauskas never gave cancer a chance to win.

"It was very scary when you first find out. When that word is said by your doctor. But, my first thought after was 'I am going to beat this'," she said.

Marisi was pleased with her first event and is looking forward to her next one.

"We had 77 people and we raised $2,000. It was super successful and such an amazing and rewarding event," she said.
