Community mourns loss of Mary Hopkins

The Cranston community is mourning the loss of Mary Hopkins, a longtime educator and wife of City Council member Ken Hopkins.

At Hugh B. Bain Middle School, where Hopkins taught for more than 20 years, students and staff lined Gansett Avenue on Monday as her funeral procession passed. Later in the day, the City Council held a moment of silence in her honor.

“This has been a sad day for the City Council and for the city as a whole,” Council Vice President Michael Favicchio said before the moment of silence.

Favicchio said the show of support from the Bain community was “one of the most emotional and moving things I’ve ever seen.” He said he knew Hopkins for more than 40 years, and that her “impact on this community will be felt for a long time.”

Condolences poured in on social media after news spread that Hopkins had passed away last week following a six-month battle with cancer.

“She was an amazing teacher and teammate,” one commenter wrote on Facebook. “Heaven gained an angel.”

Mayor Allan Fung shared the news through a post, expressing his “extreme sadness.”

“The Hopkins family is beloved here in our community, with Ken & Mary teaching so many of you throughout the years,” the mayor wrote.

Kenny Hopkins, son of Ken and Mary, delivered a eulogy for his mother during Monday’s service and shared his remarks on Facebook.

“The pillars of my mother’s life were her family and her faith … My mother was a prayer lived, for she saw the Face of God in the people and experiences of her life,” he wrote.

He added: “I’d kindly ask that to honor my mother and her legacy, please, over the course of the next days, weeks, months or years, perform an act of kindness, and remember my mother, thanking her for the kindness and compassion she has shown you.”

According to an obituary, Mary Elizabeth (Gramolini) Hopkins was born March 2, 1956. She and her husband were married for 41 years. In addition to their son, they have two daughters, Lauren and Katelyn, and four grandchildren.

Monday’s Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Mark Church in Cranston, and Hopkins was laid to rest in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions to Hugh B. Bain Middle School, 845 Park Ave., Cranston, RI, 02910, with “Remembering Mary Hopkins” written in the memo line.
