Needing a win to stay in the middle of the playoff picture, the Cranston East football team never got off the ground on Friday night.

The ’Bolts were shutout 26-0 by Cumberland, East’s worst loss of the season. It fell to 1-4 in Division I and will now need to win out, plus get help from a number of teams just to have a shot at qualifying for the postseason.

Cumberland, which improved to 3-3 and is very much in the playoff hunt, got three rushing touchdowns of 36, 5 and 63 yards from Michael Stock, and quarterback Tyler Calabro added a 1-yard touchdown run.

The Clippers led 13-0 after one quarter and 19-0 at halftime. They added another touchdown in the third quarter to put the finishing touches on a dominating win.

East’s next game is at 1-5 East Providence on Saturday at 7 p.m.

East boys’ soccer riding high

The playoffs are set to begin this week, and the Cranston East boys’ soccer team is in a good spot as it chases a Division III title.

The ’Bolts wrapped up the No. 3 seed in the postseason this past week thanks to a 4-0 win over Tiverton and a 1-1 draw with first-place Woonsocket.

Kevin Donnelly found the net three times over the course of the two games, while Dennis Vasquez scored a pair of goals as well.

East finished the season at 8-2-4, giving it 28 points. That was tied for third with Providence Country Day, but the ’Bolts received the tiebreaker edge due to a head-to-head victory earlier in the season.

Woonsocket is the No. 1 seed with 35 points, earning the tiebreaker over No. 2 seed Davies.

The postseason is set to begin this week with the preliminary round games, but East, because it is a top-four seed, will have a bye into the quarterfinal round of the playoffs. It will take on the winner of the Scituate-Exeter-West Greenwich preliminary round game.

The quarterfinals are tentatively scheduled for Saturday at the home site of the higher seed, with the semifinals set for next Wednesday at Cumberland High School.
