On Saturday in Saco, Maine, the high school careers of three outstanding sprinters at Cranston High School West came to a triumphant close at the New England Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Only the top athletes across New England based on their performance are able to participate in this event and this is the third year in a row the trio has competed at the New England Championships.

The three seniors, Eleni Grammas, Nicole Grammas and Oceana Williams, and junior Sofia Cadden placed fourth in the 4x100-meter relay at the New England Championships just a week after placing second at the 2015 Rhode Island Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Williams also placed third in Rhode Island in the 100-meter dash and third in the 200-meter, which qualified her to run in the New England’s. Eleni Grammas also placed fourth in the 100-meter dash and Nicole Grammas placed fifth in the 400-meter in Rhode Island, which also qualified them to compete in the New England Championships.

The three senior captains Eleni Grammas, Nicole Grammas and Williams have been competing together for the past three years and combined hold Cranston High School West records in outdoor track in the 4x100-meter relay, 100-meter dash, 200-meter, 400-meter and 4x400-meter relay, as well as indoor track in the 4x200-meter relay, 50-meter dash, 300-meter, 600-meter and 4x400-meter relay.

Clement Soscia, their high school track coach, said “it might be a very long time before we see this caliber of sprinters competing at West at the same time.”

In the fall, Williams will be attending Southern Connecticut State, where she is planning to run track. Eleni and Nicole Grammas will be attending Rhode Island College, where they are planning to play soccer and run track.
