The Cranston Arts Commission recently commissioned a public art mural by Rhode Island artist Amy Bartlett Wright on the exterior wall of Crosstown Press, with the space made available by the business’ owner, Steven Levy.

On Sunday, Sept. 22, a dedication ceremony was held for the mural, titled “Crane Flight,” at the intersection of Park and Pontiac avenues.

Mayor Allan Fung was on hand for the ceremony, which included a ribbon cutting. Others in attendance included City Council members, Levy, Bartlett Wright and members of the Arts Commission.

“The symbol of flying birds to me signifies growth and personal evolution, flight to new experiences and opportunities,” Bartlett Wright said. “The birds are whooping cranes, magnificent large birds that are graceful and elegant. The city of Cranston seal consists of three silver cranes on a red shield. The crane is a symbol of hope and healing. And ‘hope’ is one of our state mottos.”

The total cost of the mural was $8,000, which included all prep work, materials and labor. The cost is being paid for through Arts Commission funds, and Levy contributed $1,000 toward the prep work. Robert O’Donnell, owner of Providence-based painting company E.F. O’Donnell and Sons, also donated the use of a section of rolling scaffolding.
