West searching for identity at midway point

The Cranston West girls volleyball team is grinding through its schedule and sits at 3-5 in league play as it reaches the midway point of the regular season slate.

The Falcons most recently got a statement 3-0 sweep of Middletown, which sat at 5-2 and firmly in the playoff picture leading up to the matchup. With a core of juniors and seniors leading the way, coach Tom Ferri is confident that his club can keep the momentum going as it enters the back half of the schedule.

“We’re trying to find our identity. We have a lot of returning juniors, only two seniors and some younger players. Everyone has been contributing but overall, we need to be a more aggressive team and limit our unforced errors,” said Ferri.

Key members of the team are seniors Francesca Coppa and Sam Healy. Junior setter Olivia Venagro has also been an important piece on the offensive side of the ball as well.

“Liv has done a great job and she makes good decisions with the ball,” Ferri said.

Junior Mia Crudale has also been emerging on the West lineup as well.

The Division II playoff race is shaping up to be a dogfight for the final few spots. East Providence and Cumberland remain undefeated at the top while Mt. Hope, Middletown and Barrington are all within striking distance.

The Falcons already squared off against the unbeaten Townies and Clippers, which Ferri hopes clears the way for some advantageous matchups in the home stretch. The Falcons’ goal is to claim one of the final seeds and to hopefully be peaking by the time the playoffs get underway.

“The hope is that the second half is better than the first. We played the two best teams in the league early on so it’s hard to gauge where we are, but this week will be telling. We will be taking on some (playoff) teams, but we’ve been improving,” said Ferri. “The goal is to make the playoffs. We’ve been getting better as the season goes on so we just need to limit the enforced errors and make the other team earn points instead of giving them to them. We just want to make the playoffs and see where we go from there.”
