Peter S. Jussila, 84, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2024, surrounded by his beloved family. Born in Middleborough, Massachusetts, Peter spent his childhood on the cranberry bogs of Cape Cod, a place that would forever hold a special place in his heart.
He graduated from Harwich High School and went on to earn both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of Rhode Island where he met his beautiful wife, Lorita in their freshman year. Peter dedicated over 40 years of service to the State of Rhode Island, where he was not only a respected professional but also a kind-hearted and supportive boss, cherished by his close colleagues Anita and Kate.
Peter was an incredible father, supporting his children with love, kindness, and a spirit of adventure. From helicopter rides to bed, leading the Boy Scouts, to attending every sports event, graduation, and important life moment, Peter was always there, guiding with a steady hand and a full heart. He also appreciated the power of music, enjoying everything from Bill Haley and the Comets to a beautiful classical piece.
Peter also never turned down a treat, whether it was ice cream, a slice of squash pie or a Greggs grape-nut pudding, he loved them all with plenty of whipped cream. His smile, accompanied by the unmistakable twinkle in his eyes, could light up any room. He was the type of person who would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need, always ready to lend a helping hand. He savored every cup of hot coffee he drank—down to the very last drop—and had a wonderful sense of humor that brought joy to those around him.
Peter is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Lorita (Fiorino) Jussila, and their sons, Joseph and his wife Diana, Paul, and their daughter-in-law Kathleen “Kate” (McDonnell) Jussila. He was an extremely proud and devoted grandfather to Andrew and Noah, and a beloved uncle to his nieces and nephews. He also is survived by his younger brothers, Bruce and his wife Marianne, and Bill and his wife Janet.
He is predeceased by his eldest son, Peter Jr., and his parents, Sulo and Bertha (Finneran) Jussila.
Peter’s warmth, laughter, and generosity touched everyone who knew him. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends, and his legacy of love will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have been part of his life.
